Coca-Cola are in discussions with a Cannabis company about CBD beverages.
Coca-Cola is no stranger to experimenting with soft drinks. The 132 year old company has recently been diversifying their products, expanding into other drinks such as tea and mineral water and even announcing their acquirement of the Costa Coffee chain.
The global company, which is responsible for iconic brands such as Coke, Sprite and Powerade, has also been experimenting with an alcoholic drink in Japan. Therefore their potential development of CBD-infused drinks may not come as too much of a shock. Coca-Cola is reportedly having “serious talks” with the Canadian cannabis company Aurora Cannabis.
These talks coincide with Canada preparing to legalise cannabis for recreational use, after permitting it for medicinal purposes for many years already. However, the purpose of this proposed CBD-infused wellness drink is not to get people high.
Heineken and Corona have recently developed marijuana-infused beverages, swapping the alcohol content for a different sort of high. But unlike some of these other big beverage companies, Coca-Cola is more interested in the health benefits of cannabis.
In fact, Coca Cola already sells a coconut water wellness drink. Cannabis-infused beverages would also be a type of wellness or recovery drink.
The beverages would be infused with cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD, which is the non-psychoactive chemical found in cannabis plants. Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring compound in cannabis and, unlike THC, does not get you high. Instead, it offers a range of health and wellness benefits.
CBD can be beneficial for promoting sleep and reducing stress, depression and anxiety, as well as offering pain relief. The CBD-infused beverages could ease inflammation, pain and cramping.
Wellness beverages are increasing in popularity and Coca-Cola is reportedly watching the development of new wellness drinks around the world, including those containing cannabidiol.
“The space is evolving quickly,” Coke said. “No decisions have been made at this time.”
According to BNN Bloomberg, products containing CBD are expected to become a $2.1 billion industry by 2020. As is always the case when trying a new substance, we recommend talking to your doctor before giving it a try.
This isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight; however, the cannabis wellness market is evolving quickly. Neither Coca-Cola nor Aurora have confirmed that they’re actually partnering up yet, but it seems that they are in discussion about it.
Despite this non-commitment, the stock markets are taking the possibility of a deal very seriously. Aurora shares were up more than 16 percent after the news and Coke’s share price was slightly up as well.
A partnership between the marijuana sector and one of the world’s most iconic brands would be ground-breaking. It is thought that Coca-Cola’s step into the cannabis market could pave the way for other soft drinks brands such as Pepsi and Doctor Pepper.
